The Paris Catacombs are in the 14th arrondissement, on Place Denfert-Rochereau, and the entrance at 1 avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy is directly across the street from Denfert-Rochereau station. Metro lines 4 and 6 and RER B all stop there, so from almost anywhere in central Paris you need one train and no changes or one. The visit is one-way: you come out at 21 bis avenue René-Coty, about 700 metres from the entrance.

Step by step

  1. 1

Take Metro line 4 or 6, or RER B, to Denfert-Rochereau.

Line 4 runs north–south through the centre (Châtelet, Saint-Michel, Montparnasse); line 6 links it with the Eiffel Tower area; RER B comes from Gare du Nord, Châtelet and Charles de Gaulle airport.

  2. 2

Leave the Metro by exit 1.

One tour operator's directions say the Catacombs entrance is then directly across the street.

  3. 3

Go to the entrance at 1 avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy.

With a timed ticket, join the line for your slot. Guided tours meet either at the entrance door or, for one operator, at Café du Rendez-vous, 2 avenue du Général Leclerc; check your booking.

  4. 4

After the visit, leave at 21 bis avenue René-Coty.

The exit is about 700 metres from the entrance; walk back to Denfert-Rochereau for the Metro and RER.

Tips

  • Arrive 10–15 minutes before your slot; late arrivals can lose their ticket.
  • Leave luggage at your hotel or a station: there are no lockers at the Catacombs.
  • If you drive, there is a paid car park at 83 boulevard Saint-Jacques.
  • Coming from the airport on RER B? Denfert-Rochereau is on the same line, but you cannot bring your suitcase into the Catacombs.
